Convert a building floor plan and construction survey into an access point count and placement plan.
Enterprise Wireless LAN Design and Radio Frequency Site Surveys
Design high-density enterprise wireless networks and run predictive and on-site radio frequency surveys that set access point placement, channel plans and capacity before a single device is installed.
Course Overview
Wireless is now the primary access layer for most enterprise buildings, yet many deployments still start from a floor plan and a guess at access point count rather than a measured radio frequency survey. The result is coverage holes, co-channel interference and networks that cannot hold a voice call while a user walks between floors. This course teaches wireless LAN design as a sequence of decisions grounded in measurement: reading a building's construction and floor plan for attenuation, running a predictive survey to place access points before cabling begins, validating that design with an active or passive on-site survey, and planning channel width and transmit power to control interference rather than maximise coverage alone. It covers capacity design for high-density spaces, fast and secure roaming for voice and real-time applications, and WPA3-Enterprise authentication with 802.1X and RADIUS. Participants work with real floor plans, spectrum analyser captures and heat maps, finishing with a validation survey report and an as-built design pack ready to hand to an installation team.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Run predictive, active and passive site surveys and reconcile their results into one design.
Plan a channel and power scheme across bands that limits co-channel and adjacent-channel interference.
Design fast, secure roaming for voice and real-time applications using 802.11k, r and v.
Size access point and controller capacity for high-density areas such as auditoriums and training rooms.
Configure WPA3-Enterprise authentication with 802.1X and RADIUS for staff and guest networks.
Produce a post-deployment validation survey report that confirms the design meets its coverage target.

01Radio Frequency Fundamentals for Wireless Design
2 sessions · 8 points
Session 1RF Behaviour, Bands and Building Materials
- Explain how frequency, power and building materials combine to determine usable wireless range.
- Compare the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands and the channel widths and client support available in each.
- Read a construction survey to identify walls, glass and floors that will attenuate a signal.
- Interpret RSSI, SNR and noise floor readings to judge whether a link will support real traffic.
Session 2Interference, Regulation and Spectrum Analysis
- Identify co-channel and adjacent-channel interference sources using a spectrum analyser capture.
- Apply dynamic frequency selection rules and regional regulatory limits to a channel plan.
- Distinguish Wi-Fi interference from non-Wi-Fi sources such as radar, microwave and video links.
- Choose channel width per band to balance throughput against the number of usable channels.
02Predictive and On-Site Survey Methods
2 sessions · 8 points
Session 1Predictive Survey and Access Point Placement
- Import a floor plan and building material data into a predictive survey model.
- Place access points and antennas to meet a coverage and signal strength target per zone.
- Model capacity by zone using expected client count and application mix rather than coverage alone.
- Produce an initial cable and power plan derived from the predictive access point layout.
Session 2Active, Passive and Post-Deployment Validation Surveys
- Run an active on-site survey that measures throughput and roaming behaviour with real traffic.
- Run a passive survey to record signal strength and interference without an associated client.
- Compare survey results against the predictive model and adjust access point power or placement.
- Compile a validation survey report with heat maps that confirms the design meets its brief.
03Capacity, Roaming and High-Density Design
2 sessions · 8 points
Session 1Capacity Planning for High-Density Environments
- Calculate airtime utilisation and client density limits for a given access point and channel plan.
- Design overlapping cell sizes and power levels for auditoriums, training rooms and open offices.
- Separate application traffic with quality-of-service marking so voice is protected under load.
- Plan additional access points and antenna selection for stadium and warehouse-style spaces.
Session 2Fast and Secure Roaming Design
- Configure 802.11k neighbour reports so clients scan efficiently before a roam decision.
- Enable 802.11r fast transition to keep voice and video sessions active while roaming.
- Use 802.11v BSS transition management to steer clients away from a congested access point.
- Test roaming performance along a defined walking path and record handoff time between cells.
04Security, Deployment and Handover
2 sessions · 8 points
Session 1Enterprise Authentication and Segmentation
- Design WPA3-Enterprise authentication with 802.1X and a RADIUS server for staff devices.
- Segment guest, corporate and Internet of Things traffic using separate service set identifiers and VLANs.
- Configure a captive portal and onboarding flow for guest and bring-your-own-device access.
- Apply wireless intrusion prevention to detect rogue access points and spoofed networks.
Session 2Deployment, Documentation and Handover
- Sequence installation so cabling, mounting and power align with the validated design.
- Hand over an as-built design pack containing floor plans, configurations and survey data.
- Set baseline performance metrics that operations staff use to judge future degradation.
- Plan a periodic re-survey cycle to catch drift caused by building or furniture changes.
