About the programme

Course Overview

A whistleblowing hotline only protects an organisation if the security team behind it can triage reports quickly, keep sources confidential under pressure and prevent retaliation that would otherwise silence future reporters. This course trains security case handlers to run a hotline in line with ISO 37002 whistleblowing management guidance: designing intake channels, classifying reports by severity and subject, protecting reporter identity through the case lifecycle, coordinating handoffs to HR, legal, audit or law enforcement, and monitoring for retaliation after a report is made. Practical work includes a live triage simulation using anonymised sample reports, a confidentiality-breach postmortem exercise, and a case file audit that checks documentation against defensibility standards. Participants finish with a case classification matrix, a retaliation monitoring checklist and a reporting template for briefing the audit committee on hotline activity without compromising individual cases.

05

Monitor for and respond to signs of retaliation against reporters and witnesses.

06

Maintain case files to a standard that withstands regulatory or litigation scrutiny.

Session 1Building a Multi-Channel Intake Process

  • Design intake channels covering phone, web form and in-person reporting options.

  • Align hotline policy with ISO 37002 principles of trust, impartiality and protection.
  • Publish a clear scope statement describing what the hotline does and does not cover.

02

Triage and Case Classification

2 sessions · 8 points

Session 1Severity and Subject Classification

  • Classify reports by severity using a matrix covering safety, financial and integrity risk.
  • Tag reports by subject matter to route them to the correct investigative owner.
  • Identify reports requiring immediate escalation such as safety or fraud in progress.
  • Deprioritise duplicate or clearly out-of-scope reports without discouraging future reporting.

Session 2Handoff and Ownership Protocols

  • Transfer cases to HR, legal, audit or law enforcement using a documented handoff protocol.
  • Preserve chain of custody for evidence attached to or referenced in a report.
  • Assign a single case owner accountable for progress even after handoff.

03

Confidentiality and Retaliation Protection

2 sessions · 8 points

Session 1Protecting Reporter and Witness Identity

  • Limit case access to personnel with a documented need to know the reporter's identity.
  • Redact identifying detail from case summaries shared outside the core investigation team.
  • Respond to attempted identity disclosure with an immediate containment and review process.
  • Train managers named in reports on confidentiality obligations before any related conversation.

Session 2Monitoring and Responding to Retaliation

  • Set baseline indicators to monitor a reporter's treatment for weeks after a report is filed.
  • Investigate retaliation complaints as a distinct case linked to the original report.
  • Apply protective measures such as reporting line changes when retaliation risk is identified.
  • Document retaliation findings and remedial action separately from the underlying misconduct case.

Session 2Reporting to Governance Bodies

  • Compile aggregate hotline metrics covering volume, category mix and resolution time.
