Course Overview
A stolen painting or a flooded storeroom does not just cost an insurance claim; it can destroy an object no replacement can replace, which is why museum security is planned differently from commercial premises security. This course works from the object outward: participants learn to assess risk at the level of an individual exhibit or storage item, specify case locking, mounting and glazing appropriate to its value and fragility, and design gallery attendant patrol patterns and intrusion detection that protect both open displays and reserve collections. Sessions cover environmental risk to collections, including temperature, humidity and light exposure controls that double as security measures against tampering, and the loan and courier security arrangements required when objects travel between institutions. Participants work through ICOM-aligned security guidance and insurer valuation requirements to build a protection plan that balances public access against theft, vandalism and fire risk.
