Assess a legal department's operational maturity against recognised legal operations competency areas.
Building a Legal Operations Function for In-House Counsel Teams
Design a legal operations function from scratch: matter management, e-billing, outside counsel guidelines, spend analytics and a legal technology stack that lawyers actually use.
Course Overview
General counsel are now expected to run legal as a function with budgets, service levels and measurable output, not as a cost centre that reacts to requests. This course gives lawyers and legal operations professionals a build plan for standing up that function from the first hire. It starts with a maturity assessment against the CLOC core competencies, then works through the operational systems a department needs in sequence: a matter management system that replaces spreadsheets and email threads, e-billing rules that catch non-compliant invoices before they are paid, and outside counsel guidelines that set rate expectations and staffing controls before a matter opens. Participants build a legal technology stack roadmap covering contract lifecycle management, intake triage and self-service tools for routine requests, then design the spend analytics and reporting that let legal defend its budget to finance with real numbers. The course closes on people and process: workflow design for a small team, a vendor panel review process, and the change management needed to get business stakeholders using the new systems instead of routing around them.
